APPLICATION FOR STARTING IN MARCH-2022
I. GENERAL INFORMATION
The Graduate Program in Physics (PPGFIS) Stricto Sensu of the Universidade Federal de Viçosa (UFV) offers positions for Master’s (Magister Scientiae) and Doctorate (Doctor Scientiae) in the following areas of concentration:
– DEVICES AND SENSORS
– EQUILIBRIUM AND NON-EQUILIBRIUM CRITICAL PHENOMENA
– THEORETICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL BIOLOGICAL PHYSICS
– PRODUCTION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF THIN FILMS, COMPOSITES AND NEW MATERIALS
– COMPLEX SYSTEMS
– MAGNETIC SYSTEMS AND NANOESTRUTURED MAGNETIC MATERIALS
– MATHEMATICAL PHYSICS AND QUANTUM FIELD THEORY
The selection of applicants will be carried out according to criteria approved by the Coordinating Committee of PPGFIS, for subsequent approval by that Committee and the Council of Graduate Studies (CTP) of the Office of Research and Graduate Studies (PPG) of UFV.
II. REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS
Masters and Doctorate candidates must register and take the exam of the Unified Examination of Graduate Courses in Physics (EUF), any edition of the last 03 (three) years. The grade obtained in this exam will be used as a partial criterion in the Selection Process, as detailed in item IV below.
The candidate for Master’s degree must hold a higher education diploma in Physics or related fields. The PhD candidate must hold a Master’s degree in Physics or related fields. The Coordinating Committee may waive the Master’s degree for admission to the Doctorate, based on criteria of academic merit. Only the candidate who presents the required documentation within the deadlines established in the calendar of the selection process will have the registration approved by the Coordinating Committee of the PPGFIS. The candidate is responsible for the veracity and authenticity of all documents and information provided.
It is recommended that, regardless of the undergraduate course completed, the candidate has taken one or more disciplines in the professional cycle of the undergraduate course in Physics, such as “Electromagnetism”, “Quantum Physics” and “Statistical Physics”.

Note: The validity of the grade obtained in the EUF exam for our Selection Process is 03 (three) years; there is no requirement for the candidate to hold the latest available edition of the EUF.

The applicant, when accessing the site of the Office of Research and Graduate Studies of UFV, must pay attention to the online application in two steps
STEP 1: Saving the application:
The data is saved every form released on the screen. At the end of the application, a password will be sent to the registered e-mail, which will be used the complete the application and future reference.
When applying, the applicant must fill out the online form, and must attach the documents required by the instructions in the application system of graduate of UFV (SISPPG). The curriculum must be attached in “Documents to send – curriculum” at the time of online application. All curriculum corroborating documents must be attached in a single file in PDF format and sent in “Documents to send – corroborating documents”.
STEP 2: Finishing the application:
Filling all data is required and, after finished, editing the same is no longer permitted.
After finishing the application, it is necessary to access again your application and check the integrity of documents entered into the system. Applications with errors or missing mandatory documentation will not be confirmed by the PPGFIS. It is the applicant’s responsibility to monitor its application by SISPPG system.
By applying, the applicant acknowledges and accepts the selection criteria established by the Coordinating Committee of PPGFIS, on which cannot be claimed ignorance.
IV. EVALUATION CRITERIA OF APPLICANTS TO MASTER’S AND DOCTORATE
The selection of applicants for the Master’s and Doctorate will be held according to the following criteria:
a) grade obtained in the exam EUF;
b) analysis of the undergraduate and graduate school records;
c) analysis of the curriculum vitae; and
d) interview (in person or via internet – to be combined with the applicant).
The purpose of the interview is to assess the candidate’s maturity for admission to graduate school, as well as to know his / her preference (s) among the lines of research and possible advisors of the Program.
The successful applicants according to the selection criteria referred to in the preceding paragraph shall be called according to the rank order.
V. FINAL INFORMATION
It is possible to obtain scholarships granted by development agencies. However, the program receives a quota of scholarships and distributes it to the applicants selected following the rank order.
– Application in the SISPPG-UFV: October 13, 2021 to February 04, 2022.
– Interview (in person or via internet): February 07, 2022 to February 11, 2022.
– Final results: February 14, 2022.
– Registration at UFV: March 03, 2022.
– Start of activities: March 07, 2022.
VII. FURTHER INFORMATION
When registrating, the applicant must meet the requirements of Chapter V of the Rules of Graduate Stricto Sensu of UFV and must provide the following documents:
(i) certified copy of the diploma or certificate of finishing undergraduate course (for doctorate, it is also required a certified copy of the master’s diploma);
(ii) certified copy of Undergraduate School Records, (form doctorate, it is also required a certified copy of the master’s School Records);
(iv) copies of the corroborating documents of all items included in the curriculum;
(v) copy of birth or wedding certificate;
(vi) copy of the I.D. or passport;
(vii) copy of the CPF;
(viii) registration fee payment voucher and
(ix) a wallet-size picture.
If the applicant, upon application, has only a certificate of completion of the course, it will be his responsibility to present to the Registrar’s Office of UFV a certified copy of his diploma.
Foreign applicants must submit, in addition, the documents required by specific legislation.
